Presentation of Fuente Palmera

The municipality of Fuente Palmera (10,893 inhabitants in 2016; 7,473 ha; municipal website) is located 50 km south-west of Córdoba. The municipality is made of the town of Fuenta Palmera and of the villages of El Villar (701 inh.), Villalón (353 inh.), La Ventilla (730 inh.), Silillos (619 inh.), Peñalosa (597 inh.), Ochavillo del Río (1,000 inh.), La Herría (290 inh.), and Cañada del Rabadán (891 inh.).

Fuente Palmera is one of the New Settlements of Sierra Morena and Andalusia, established by Royal Letters (text) signed on 5 July 1767 in Madrid by King Charles III. The document contains "instructions and the settlement charter to be applied in those [settlements] newly established in the Sierra Morena with natives and Roman Catholic foreigners". The Preamble of the Letters states that Pablo de Olavide, Knight of the Order of St. James, "Assistant" of the king in Seville and Intendent of the Army of Andalusia, is appointed Superintendant General in charge of the direction of the new settlements to be established in Sierra Morena. The king "proposes" that Juan Gaspar de Thurriégel, of Bavarian citizenship and Roman Catholic religion, introduces 6,000 Roman Catholic, German and Flemish colonists in the kingdom.

Ochavillo del Río (municipal website) was also one of the New Settlements of Sierra Morena. The village was originally named Aldea del Río (The River's Hamlet), being located close to river Guadalquivir. There are different local explanations on the origin of its present-day name.

The flag of Ochavillo del Río, adopted on 28 December 2017 by the Village Council and submitted on 7 March 2018 to the Directorate General of the Local Administration, is prescribed by a Resolution adopted on 12 March 2018 by the Directorate General of the Local Administration and published on 16 March 2018 in the Andalusian official gazette, No. 228, pp. 45-46 (text).
The flag is described as follows:

Flag: Rectangular, in proportions 2:3, horizontally divided into three stripes of equal width:
- the upper stripe, green, as distinctive of the people of Al-Andalus;
- the central stripe, white, for the flag of Andalusia, charged with the coat of arms of the village in full colors;
- the lower stripe, violet, referring to the purple color of the flag of the Castilian people.

The coat of arms of Ochavillo del Río, adopted on 25 September 2012 by the Village Council and submitted on 30 October 2012 to the Directorate General of the Local Administration, is prescribed by a Resolution adopted on 6 November 2012 by the Directorate General of the Local Administration and published on 21 November 2012 in the Andalusian official gazette, No. 228, p. 89 (text).
The coat of arms is described as follows:

Coat of arms: The main part of the coat of arms represents the village (central nucleus) as a scale map, seen from above.
In the center of the map is the village's square, represented like an eight-pointed star, on the model of the star characteristic of Al-Andalus (for the Arab origin of the locality).
In the lower part, the two lines represent river Guadalquivir.
Above the main part are placed nine stars, which, together with the star in the center of the coat of arms, represent the ten settlements forming the colony.
On the left side is inscribed "SUBASIL", the first known name of the settlement, of Arab origin; on the right side is inscribed "ALDEA DEL RÍO", the name given to the colony when established.
Colours: Green, as distinctive of the people of Al-Andalus, and violet, as a reference to the purple color of the flag of the people of Castile.
The used font is Garamond. Additional for texts: Verdana.

Victor Gael published on 12 September 2009 the Constitution of the Republic of Ochavillo del Río (text), proclaimed independent from Córdoba. The flags of the Republic are proclaimed in Article 9, as follows:
"Ochavillo del Río shall have two flags, a celestial blue one and a black one, to be used daily and nightly, respectively, so that none can see them."
