Flag of Villar del Rey

The flag (photo, photo, photo, photo) and arms of Villar del Rey, adopted on 17 April 1989 by the Municipal Council and validated on 15 February 1991 by the Royal Academy of History, are prescribed by an Order issued on 9 April 1991 by the Government of Extremadura and published on 16 April 1991 in the official gazette of Extremadura, No. 28, pp. 789-790 (text).
The symbols are described as follows:

Flag: Quadrangular. Red, charged in the center with the crowned municipal coat of arms.
Coat of arms: Quarterly per saltire, 1. Azure a crown open with three florets or, 2. and 3. Argent a lion purpure a column wrapped with a scroll or inscribed "Plus Ultra", 4. Azure a caldron or. The shield surmounted by a Royal crown closed.

The Royal Academy of History suggested modifications to the proposed symbols, which appear to have been implemented.
The arms, designed from scratch, allude to the place's name (1st quarter), then belonging to the jurisdiction of Badajoz (2nd and 3rd quarters), and the grant of the domain to the Guzmán in the middle 17th century (4th quarter).
The Academy rejected the juxtaposition of similar colors, which deprives the design from the required chromatic contrast. The model of crown used to make the armx canting should fit the medieval models.
The coat of arms featured on the municipal flag, if any, should be the municipal coat of arms.
