Coat of Arms: Shield Azure with base wavy of Argent and Azure, issuant from base an embattled wall Gules, above under an arch Gules supported by two towers Gules masoned Sable with cone roofs topped by balls Or in a white field two saints respectant dressed Azure, the dexter one holding an anchor Or, the sinister one a sword Or, on dexter chief a waxing crescent Or, on sinister chief a 7-point star Or.
Meaning:
The arms are derived from the old seal of the city, known since 1356, but dating from around 1250. The arms were formally registered in 1938.
The saints, St. Clement with his attribute the anchor and St. Paul with his attribute the sword, are the two patron saints of the local cathedral. In some old versions of the seal and/or coat of arms, the two saints are holding oars. This is due to a misunderstanding of the city name as "Åre-hus" (= oar-house). Actually it is based on "Å-os", (= river mouth).
The former spelling of the city name had been "Århus", in 2010 the even older version "Aarhus" was reinstalled by the city council.

Århus Amt (>Århus Subcounty) existed since 1793 and had been substantially enlarged in 1970, when it became the biggest subcounty in Jutland. It was dissolved in 2007. The seat had been Højbjerg, a southern suburb of Århus City.
The arms before 1970 displayed on a shield Azure an anchor Argent flanked by ten oak leaves Or ordered 4:4:2. Since 1970 the arms displayed on a shield Azure a bend sinsiter wavy Argent with an anchor Argent on dexter chief. The shield of the latter may be used on a flag (colour unstated).
