Bendorf Coat of Arms

Shield Azure; on central base an inescutcheon Gules, charged with a double queued lion rampant guardant Or, armed and tongued Azure; issuant from inescutcheon a bishop dressed Argent with mitre Or, holding a book Gules by his dexter hand and crozier Or by his sinister hand.
Meaning:
The arms are based on two seals of lay judges from the 2nd half of the 14th century. The lion displays the family arms of the Counts of Sayn, local manorial lords and holders of the local cognisance, furthermore since the middle of th 14th century reeves of the Maria Laach Abbey. Also alluding to the abbey are the attributes of the bishop, who is St. Medard, the former patron saint of Bendorf. In 1929 Otto Hupp painted arms, only showing the lion on top of a city wall. Those arms were adopted officially in 1939.
