Ebeleben Coat of Arms

Shield Azure a beehive Or on basement Argent, surrounded by seven bees.
Meaning:
The village was mentioned in 1198 as seat of commissionaires of the Landgraves of Thüringen. At the end of the Medieval it had been a fiefdom of the Wettin kin and the Counts of Schwarzburg. Both held 50%. It was completely acquired by the counts in 1615, it remained however a fiefdom of the Electorate of Sachsen, the counts had only been vassals, until 1816 the counts controlled the town without any constraints. The town was seat of a district (German: Amt) of the Counts of Schwarzburg-Sondershausen, later upgraded to princes. The oldest town seal from 1884 just displayed the beehive. The bees were added one by one during the following years. Probably the arms are referring to the Cistercian order, which owned a few monasteries around the town. Ebeleben gained city rights in 1928.
