Coat of Arms

Shield parted per pale; above Azure a bishop issuant Argent, robe and mitre decorated with bordures Or, holding a book Or in his right hand and a crozier Or in his left hand; benath Or, the lower half of a facetted 8-point star.
Meaning:
The arms are derived the oldest seal of the city, which is known since 1236 but existed probably since 1227. The town gained city rights in 1188 by the Bishops of Paderborn, the former rulers. Although the figure in the circumscription is denoted as St. Kilian, today it is considered to be a bishop of Paderborn, most likely it shows Bishop Wilbrand of Paderborn. The star is taken from the Waldeck arms, as the Counts of Schwalenberg-Waldeck ruled the city as vassals of the bishops since 1227. In later seals the image was placed on a shield and the star was made an eight-pointed star, such as in the arms of the Counts of Waldeck. The second seal, known since 1265, showed the bishop without the book and holding the stick in his left hand. In the third seal, known since 1377, the bishop again holds a book. The tinctures were fixed in 1947.
