Municipality

The municipality of Laurentino (6,005 inhabitants in 2010; 7,951 ha) is located 200 km west of Florianópolis.

Laurentino was named for one of its early colonists, Manoel Laurentino de Andrade, a cousin of the town's founder (10 November 1908), João Venceslau Pereira. Laurentino was locally known as a skillful well digger, so that his place of residence was known as At Laurentino's.
The district of Laurentino was established within the municipality of Rio do Sul by Municipal Law No. 301 promulgated on 29 April 1957 and inaugurated on 28 December 1957, to be elevated a municipality by State Law No. 630 promulgated on 12 June 1962 and inaugurated on 25 July 1962.
