Żagań - Urban Commune - area 39.98 km2
- is located in Żagań county in the south-western part of Poland. German
name: Sagan. Legends have it that Żagań was founded in the year
700 by Princes Żaganna from the family of Krokus, Wanda's daughter. During
World War II there was POW camp Stalag VIII C, Stalag Luft 3. On
24/25 March 1944 was the famous escape of airmen from POW camp Luft 3.
Population (2000) 28.140.
