In this video (http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-asia-pacific-26114113[1]) one can see the flag of Air New Zealand (1:48), which is a black horizontal flag with the logo (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Air_NZ_logo_new_2012.png [2]) inverted, that is, logo in white as to its traditional representation.

Air New Zealand began as TEAL (Tasman Empire Airways Limited) in 1940. Source: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Air_New_Zealand  For additional information go to Air New Zealand (official website): http://www.airnewzealand.com/gateway

The logo (i.e., the koru) has always been white. It used to be white on greenish-blue (a pun on the airline's former name of TEAL), but was changed to a darker background (originally dark blue, I think, but now black) several years ago. The koru is often used in black on a white background in advertising, but never that way round on a flag.

A koru, BTW, is a traditional Maori representation of young fern shoot, and is a very common element of Maori design (also found in the Tino Rangatiratanga flag and the Hundertwasser "Koru flag". The koru is the central element of traditional kowhaiwhai designs, used on the rafters of Maori meeting houses (wharenui). For details of some different designs (including the "ngaru" (waves travelled) design that is the basis of the Air New Zealand logo), see http://www.maori.org.nz/whakairo/default.php?pid=sp55&parent=52)

Older Flags

I found a short video of previous blue version of Air New Zealand flag: http://shelf3d.com/2WrjnC_PYRc#Air New Zealand Flag.AVI. Please note that different font type was used for letters placed under the Koru emblem. Based on this clip, I draw its previous flag image.

This image is from memory, so the exact colour and the exact dimensions may not be accurate. As to the flag itself, the white design in the centre of the teal background is a koru, a traditional Maori carving design in the form of stylised fern fronds. Air NZ's koru is shaped like stylised "wind gusts" (and looks to me like a stylised number 4).

I seem to recall I have also seen the flag with the corporate name under the logo, but this is, I'm sure, the more common version. I think it has also been flown in white on dark blue at some point during the company's history, and the company's current logo shows the koru in dark blue on white.

National Airways Corporation

The National Airways Corporation was the national domestic airline of New Zealand from 1947 until 1978 when it amalgamated with Air New Zealand.
The three flags here feature the 'Godwit' roundel used by NAC from 1968 to 1978.
From the collection of the Museum of Transport and Technology, New Zealand.
