Overview

Ball State University in Muncie, Indiana, was originally known as Ball State Teachers' College. It was endowed by the Ball Brothers, who made the vacuum sealed glass jars which most American families used to preserve food during the 19th and early 20th Centuries, before electric refrigeration or even ice boxes became common. The college changed its name to Ball State College and eventually to Ball State University, the name by which it is presently known. The two former teacher training institutions in Indiana were Indiana State Teachers College in Terre Haute and Ball State Teachers College. Both institutions are now full service universities. Ball in particular became the college of choice for many Hoosier parents in order to protect their children from those dangerous radicals at Indiana University in Bloomington and Purdue University in West Lafayette.
