On Flag Day June 14, Aitkin County Friends of the Arts
(ACFOA) and the city of Aitkin announced Chip Borkenhagen as the winner of the
official flag design contest.
Borkenhagen commented, “My thoughts on this
design were that (as enamored as I am with steamboats) I wanted to get to the
essence of Aitkin as it is now - and our future. We are known for our woodlands,
lakes, and rivers, and it’s our natural environment heritage that will keep our
area alive and moving forward. The effort was to keep this design clean, fresh,
and just a little different than many other cities. This flag will hopefully
inspire us to work towards re-inventing our city, making it more economically
and environmentally healthy.”
