Coat of arms

Shield Argent with base wavy of Azure and Argent, two olive trees eradicated Vert fruited Sable ordered per fess, in central chief a fleur-de-lis Azure. Mural crown Argent with three visible towers (village rank) and white scroll with inscription in black initials "OLIVAL - VILA NOVA DE GAIA".
Meaning:
The olive trees are canting elements. The fleur-de-lis is an attribute of Our Lady of Assumption, the local patron saint.

It is a typical Portuguese communal flag, with the coat of arms centred on a field quartered of red and white.

Coat of arms

Shield Or with base wavy of Azure and Or, a coiler Gules, in dexter chief an embattled tower Sable with port and windows Gules, in sinister chief an inescutcheon Azure charged with 13 paltes ordered 2:3:2:3:2:1. Mural crown Argent with three visible towers (village rank) and white scroll with inscription in black initials "CRESTUMA".
Meaning:
The commune's name is derived from "Castro e Uima", which is "castle and Uima (river)", and is alluding to an old fortress, which closed the mouth of River Uima. The inescutcheon, the pattern is called "Portugal antigo" (= Portugal ancient), is referring to the importance of the location for the onset of the Portuguese nation. The base wavy is symbolizing the rivers Douro and Uima. The coiler is representing the textiles industries with its spinning mills.
