About the Flag

It is a typical Portuguese communal flag, with the coat of arms centred on a plain green background (village rank).

Coat of arms

[ commune CoA] image by Sérgio Horta,

The arms are Or rocky island Sable garnished Argent issuant from a base wavy Vert charged with two barrulets wavy Argent and in chief a cross patty/formy Gules voided (standing for the Christ Knights' Order but voided instead of filled Argent) between two bunches of grapes Purpure stemmed Vert. Mural crown argent with three visible towers (village rank) and white scroll reading in black upper case letters "BISCOITOS - PRAIA DA VITÓRIA".
Meaning;
"Biscoitos" means primarily "biscuits" in Portuguese but in this case a lesser known polysemic homonym is meant (canting) local volcano scoriae. So, no biscuits in these arms; if you feel like having a snack, peck the grapes, here standing for < http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Verdelho > local verdelho vineyards, these gapes are white, not red, and thus the coat of arms is not accurate. The base wavy is representing the sea.
António Martins-Tuválkin, 26 July 2010

Flag and coat arms adopted and published in the official journal Diário do Governo : III Série in 1995.06.26.
