About the Flag

It is a quite typical Portuguese municipal flag, with the coat of arms centred on a plain red background.

The arms are Azure a castle Or with port and windows Gules and in chief an inescutcheon Argent charged with five inescutcheons Azure set crosswise each charged with five plates set saltirewise (quina) and the inescutcheon Argent between two keys Argent set palewise and turned inwards. Mural crown argent with four visible towers (town rank) and white scroll reading in black upper case letters "MUI NOBRE E SEMPRE LEAL VILA DE MARVÃO".
Meaning:
"Marvão" stands for Ibn Marwan, a local lord and scholar of the 9th century, which does not show on the arms.

Marvão municipality had 4029 inhabitants in 2001, and it consists of 4 communes, covering 154,85 km². It is part of Portalegre District, traditional province and NUTS III Alto Alentejo, 1999 ref. adm. region and C.C.R. / NUTS II Alentejo.
