Coat of arms

[Ílhavo (São Salvador) commune CoA] image by Sérgio Horta, 20 Oct 2014

The shield is Argent, a sailing ship Gules with oars and rudder Or sailing to the dexter over waves Vert and Azure., in central chief an orb purple. Mural crown Argent with three visible towers and white scroll reading in black upper case letters "ÍÍLHAVO - S. SALVADOR".
Meaning:
The ship is a Phoenecian warship. The same type of ship is also found in the arms of Ílhavo MunicipalityThough São Salvador is located on the banks of Rio Boco, the green colour (and the ship) suggest a location on the shores of the Atlantic in the past. The orb might be an attribute of the Divine Saviour, the local patron saint, and thus a canting element.

Flag and arms adopted and published in Diário da República: III Série on 2 September 1997
