Coat of arms

Shield Azure, a paly sword Argent piercing in base a bar wavy Or charged with a barrulet wavy Gules. In dexter chief a cogwheel Or, in sinister chief a corn cob and a wheat ear, both Or leaved Vert. Mural crown Argent with five visible towers (city rank) and white scroll with inscription in black initials "CIDADE DE RIO TINTO".
Rio Tinto literally is the "black river", but "tinto" is the colour of red vine and of blood. Sword and bar wavy are reminding on a battle on the banks of the Rio Tinto between Christians and Moors, when the river was red of blood. Cogwheel and cereals are representing industry and agriculture.
