The municipal flag: "Stripes of a length 1 : 3, yellow and blue with at the center of the blue a lying unicorn looking back." Established 23 Jul 1963; derived from the municipal Coat of Arms; The unicorn has been taken from a family Coat of Arms, but its significance seems to be a mystery.
Jarig Bakker, 31 August 1999

In view of the mysterious origin of the unicorn in the flag of Menaldumadeel (Fryslân) it might be a good idea to have a look in Ee (Dongeradeel). Flag and Coat of Arms of that village contain a unicorn. Perhaps there is a connection somewhere."
Saskia Steinhorst, 25 Mar 2004

There is a new municipality in the Province of Friesland - Waadhoeke, proclaimed on 01.01.2018. It consists of the former municipalities of Franekeradeel, het Bildt, Menameradiel and parts of Littenseradiel, which all were dissolved on the same date.

adopted 3 Sep 2002; design: Rudolf J. Broersma

Mr Rudolf Broersma kindly sent me an image of the pennant of the municipality of Menaldumadeel (Frisian: Menameradiel), in (NW) Fryslân province in the Netherlands.
Description: a blue hoist, with a white erased and turned unicorn's head; two fly-stripes of blue and white.
Additional information: This was originally designed in the 1980's, by means of a system, which placed municipalities in the old provincial divisions (Oostergo, Westergo or Zevenwouden).
The head of the unicorn was turned at the request of the municipality, to agree with arms and flag, which show a regardant unicorn.
Design: adopted 3 Sep 2002, by municipal resolution, and registered in Genealogysk Jierboek 2004, blz. 177. Author: Rudolf J. Broersma

Menaldumadeel unofficial wimpel

[Menaldumadeel unofficialwimpel] image by Jarig Bakker, 3 Sep 2003

On my way from Harlingen to Eagum last saturday, I came to Dronrijp, in Menaldumadeel, where apart from a lot of Frisian wimpels one wimpel was flying that I believe must have been the municipal wimpel of Menaldumadeel:
A square blue hoist charged with a white lying unicorn with head turned, details in blue; two vertical equally wide stripes of blue and white.
The unicorn comes from the flag of Menaldumadeel; for the municipality wimpels blue and white stripes were chosen for the municipalities of Westergo. The municipal website shows it too.
