Coat of Arms

image from cefimslp.gob.mx

The council informed me their coat of arms was designed by Prof. Israel Hernández Tello, winner of a contest held by the council under Municipal President Andrés Hernández Hernández (1998-2000). The coat of arms has a scrolled border in brown, reading at the top "RAYON 1617", the year of its foundation. At the bottom is a blue ribbon reading the motto "PAZ, UNIDAD Y TRABAJO" [Peace, Unity, and work]. The shield is divided into three sections. The upper-left section depicts the Virgin of the Refuge, patron saint of the Municipality. The upper-right section depicts the waterfall named "Los Chorros" found in the Ejido de San Felipe de Jesús Gamotes, with hills and a tree in the background. The lower section depicts a ploughed field for agriculture, with a cow (left, for cattle-raising) and a cob of corn (right, also for agriculture) and a hill in the background. In the center, over an oval, is the friar Juan Bautista de Mollinedo, also having a background of hills. Under him, Nuevo Gamotes is read; the original name until 1857.
