Coat of Arms

The municipal chronicler informed me the municipal coat of arms was adopted on 8 June 1985, during the administration of Municipal President Maricela del Ángel Larraga (1983-1985). It was designed by José Luis or Hugo Cordero Barrón (council information conflicts with information online; Hugo could be a nickname), alumnus of 3B in the secondary school "Melchor Ocampo" and winner of the call for submissions given by the Municipal Council, apparently held from September to December 1983.

The shield has two hands shaking above it and laurel branches behind them, signifying friendship amongst Ébano's residents and glory. To the sides of the shield are oil derricks, signifying the petroleum industry as integral to its foundation. Under the shield is a ribbon in the National Colors for patriotism tying together a cob of corn for agriculture and an oil derrick for the petroleum industry. Hats are found above each element signifying the same; above the cob of corn is a sombrero for the hard work in the fields, and above the oil derrick is a hard hat for the labor in its extraction, both symbols of its foundation. The shield is divided into four sections: the upper-left section depicts a hill, remembering the La Pez Hill as integral to its history. The upper-right section depicts a tree, which gave the name to the municipality (ébano tree; or ebony). The lower-left section depicts five corn plants over a ploughed field and a cob of corn to the right, symbol of agriculture. The lower-right section depicts a horse and cow, with a background of grass and the hills; this is for the cattle-raising industry.
