Overview

Merkine (Varena District) - on a blue field a charging golden armed silver unicorn with red tongue. Flag proportions 5:6, fringe is silver, finial is a golden lance head with a ring. The charge of arms granted on December 7, 1569 reflects the oncoming (after the day of granting) feast of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Also the white unicorn is one of the symbols of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, and here it honours Merkine as a city of state (in 14th-18th centuries Merkine was not just the small town as now, but one of most important cities of Lithuania).
