Description of the flag

Yellow stylized Katakana character of Mi (ミ) of Miyazaki on light green field. The emblem is shaped like a step symbolizing progress of Miyazaki. Yellow stands for the sun. Adopted 1964-12-22.
Nozomi Kariyasu, 6 May 1998

Green flag with yellow slanted rectangles (parallelograms?) reminding of ZZ Top sign. 5:7

This flag is in Smith 1980 marked as state flag on land.
Željko Heimer, 8 December 1996

The character pronounced "Mi" consists of three equal length horizontal strokes, one over the other. Here, they are offset and given enough breadth that they have a pleasing appearance. By the way, the green of the background is "midori", also with the same first character.
Bruce Ward, 8 December 1996

Prefectural flag

The green and yellow colors represent the prefecture's abundant greenery and sunshine. The three horizontal strokes represent the katakana syllable "mi" the first syllable of Miyazaki. They also resemble a staircase, symbolizing progress.

The construction sheet for the flag is at the prefecture website. The flag has a ratio of 10x14 and the green background color is 11-16-6 (Munsell, I believe) and the yellow color is 8-19-6 (once again, Munsell I believe). Zachary Harden, 13 September 2009

The prefecture flag was adopted on Dec 22nd 1964 by Notice No 838.
