Flag of Krapina

The symbols of Krapina are prescribed by Decision Odluka o opisu i uporabi grba i zastave Grada Krapine, adopted on 9 October 1997 by the Town Assembly and published on 2 December 1997 in the County official gazette Službeni glasnik Krapinsko-zagorske županije, No. 12. This was amended by Decision Odluka o izmjeni i dopuni Odluke o opisu i uporabi grba i zastave Grada Krapine, adopted on 30 June 2010 by the Town Assembly and published the same day in the Town official gazette Službeni glasnik Grada Krapine, No. 5 (text).

The symbols were designed by the Heraldic Art d.o.o. company, from Rijeka, and approved on 27 October 1997 by the Ministry of Administration.

The flag is prescribed as "... coloured red. In the middle of the flag is the coat of arms of the town of Krapina bordered yellow. The flag is rectangular in shape and shall be produced in proportions 2:1".
The flag is used with the coat of arms bordered yellow (photo), as prescribed, or not.

Coat of arms of Krapina

[Town coat of arms] image by Željko Heimer, 11 July 2013

The coat of arms is prescribed as follows:

... in a shield shape and outlined in black. In the shield, on a blue background, three towers of masoned stone represent the fortresses of Krapina. The central tower is the highest and carries four embattlements with two parallel windows at the top flor. The side towers are lower and with three embtallements and a high roof each, atop the roof at each end is set a ball. The towers are protected with a wall infront, in the centre of which are doors with a small tower with a roof above them. At each far end of the wall stands a small tower with pointed roof. The field of the coat of arms is blue while the roofs of the towers are red. The walls are white with black lines.

The modern coat of arms of Krapina is based on a seal from the 12th century, picturing the same fortified town in circular shape with the name of the town around it. The current colurs were eventually determined during the 19th century.

Ceremonial flag of Krapina

[Town ceremonial flag] image by Željko Heimer, 10 October 2015

A photo in the local magazine Zagorski list, No. 34, 9 June 2004, shows three flags on display in the Krapina-Zagorje County Assembly Hall. the middle one is the flag of Croatia, to its right (viewer's left) is the County's ceremonial flag and on the other side is the ceremonial flag of the town of Krapina. I believe that such a display of two ceremonial flags together is rather unusual, probably the two entities share the same Assembly Hall.
According to this photo and also to reports from several media (photos), the ceremonial flag of the town of Krapina is a red gonfalon with three unequally long triangularly ending tails with golden tassels and with the coat of arms in the middle and the name of the town above.
The two flags side by side on the photo clearly show different rectangular sleaves in the upper edge.

Former symbols of Krapina

[Former town flag]         [Former town arms] images by Željko Heimer, 27 July 2016

Prior to the adoption of the current flag in 1997, the town of Krapina used a flag that I have observed in ca. 1993, brown with with a black lined coat of arms on a yellow patch. The cover of the music album Festival kajkavske popevke Krapina '67, published by Jugoton, Zagreb in 1967, includes a large rendition of the coat of arms (photo). Accordingly, the coat of arms and the matching flag must have been adopted not later than 1967.

Article 3 of the Town Statutes Statut Grada Krapine, adopted on 31 March 1994 by the Town Assembly and published the same day in Službeni glasnik Županije Krapinsko-zagorske, No. 4, describes similar symbols, as follows.

In the field of the arms, three towers of carpented stones are visible, symbolizing the Krapina fortress. The central tower is the highest and carries four embatllements with two parallel window on the top floor. The side towers are lower, with three embattlements and a high roof, having at each of its ends a golden ball. In front of the towers is a protective wall with a rectangular gates, topped with a small tower with pointed roof. At each end of the wall is a small tower topped with a pointed roof. Between them and the small gate tower are two embatllements above the gates.
The field of the coat of arms is yellow, while the silhouettes of the towers, gates, windows and roofs are on the dexter brown and on the sinister and bottom white. The wall beneath the towers is coloured with slanted interlaced stripes of yellow-white-brown. Around the coat of arms, from bottom left to bottom right, a wavy ribbon extends, coloured white, inscribed with the word "Krapina" at the top above the coat of arms.
The flag is of brick colour. The ratio of the width and length is 3:1.5, and in the centre of the flag is the coat of arms of Krapina.
A butcher from Krapina who was chairman of the Craftsmen Association in 1941 hid the association flag in front of the German troops. Thirty years later, he revealed on his death bed the hiding place, asking his descendants to return the flag to the current Association. The flag, attached to the staff with 34 golden nails inscribed with the names of benefactors, includes the inscription and the town arms of Krapina embroidered in gold. The flag was supposed to be displayed in the Town Museum.
The coat of arms of Krapina in that flag is indeed very similar - although not exactly the same - as the design used in the 1970s.
