Flag of Virje

The symbols of Virje are prescribed by Decision Odluka o grbu i zastavi Općine Virje, adopted on 2 June 1995 by the Municipality Assembly and published on 8 July 1995 in the County official gazette Službeni glasnik Županije Koprivnicko-križevacke, No. 7. The attachement to the Decision Idejno rješenje grba i zastave Općine Virje, adopted on 2 June 1995 and published on 18 July 1995 in Službeni glasnik Županije Koprivnicko-križevacke, No. 8, shows drawings of the symbols.
The symbols are described in the Municipality Statutes Statut Općine Virje, adopted on 4 October 2001 and published on 5 March 2001 in Službeni glasnik Koprivnicko-križevacke županije, No. 11. This is repeated in the Municipality Statutes Statut Općine Virje, adopted on 8 July 2009 and published on 15 July 2009 in Službeni glasnik Koprivnicko-križevacke županije, No. 9, and in the current Municipality Statutes Statut Općine Virje, adopted on 26 March 2013 and published on 23 April 2013 in Službeni glasnik Koprivnicko-križevacke županije, No. 3 (text).

The symbols were approved on 7 July 1995 by the Ministry of Administration.
Erničić [erc03] credits the design of the symbols to Ivica Tišljar, while Božica Jelušić credits it to Zdravko Tišljar, a professor and academic painter in Zagreb (Glas Podravine, 6 March 2009). Ivica and Zdravko are known cultural workers from Virje.

They were consecrated on 11 November 1994, the Municipality Day (St. Martin), in the local parish church (Glas Podravine, 14 March 1995).

The flag is in proportions 1:2, yellow with the coat of arms offset towards the hoist. Only the proportions were changed from the previous design.

Coat of arms of Virje

The coat of arms is prescribed in Article 5 of the Municipality Statutes that prescribed the previous symbols, as follows:

In a golden (yellow) triangular shield with red ornamental border there is set a red cloak cut from right to left. This is the cloak of the patron saint of Virje, St. Martin. In the inner side of the cloak is a silver (white) cross. The cloak has a circular clasp on the right shoulder.

St. Martin is known for his deed of cutting his cloak in two and sharing it with a beggar. Many coats of arms show St. Martin riding a horse, giving a piece of his cloak to a beggar.

The former symbols of Virje are prescribed by Statutory Decision Odluka o izmjenama Statuta Općine Virje, adopted on 3 November 1994 by the Municipality Assembly and published on 15 November 1994 in Službeni glasnik Županije Koprivnicko-križevacke, No. 15.

The flag is prescribed in Article 6 of the Municipality Statutes, as follows:

The Municipality of Virje has its flag, yellow (proportions 1:1.4) with the coat of arms of the Municipality of Virje set near the mast, this covering with its size and position almost 2/3 of the flag.

Former symbols of Virje (1994)

The earlier symbols of Virje are prescribed in the Municipality Statutes Statuta Općine Virje, adopted on 31 March 1994 by the Municipality Assembly and published on 12 April 1994 in Službeni glasnik Županije Koprivnicko-križevacke, No. 9.

The flag is prescribed in Article 6 of the Municipality Statutes, as follows (a vertical flag appears to be described):

The Municipality of Virje has its flag which is white with the coat of arms of the Municipality of Virje in the centre of the field. On the left end of the flag is the Croatian wattle, and on the right an ornament of wheat ears. At the bottom end of the flag is a 10 cm wide golden edge of fringe. The flag is in size 120 cm x 80 cm.

The coat of arms is prescribed in Article 5 of the Municipality Statutes, as follows:

The coat of arms of the Municipality of Virje is the old coat of arms of Prodavić* in a Norman shield shape coloured green. In the centre of the coat of arms is a smaller splintered** Norman shield coloured red with a thin staff from which two brown rooster feathers are issuing. At the left and the right are eagle wings coloured brown. Above the coat of arms is inscribed in black "Općina Virje".

*Prodavić is the old name of the town of Virje.
**The word used here means in Croatian heraldic terminology "per pale", but it seems that this was used to mean something else, possibly a different shield shape.

The symbols were not approved by the central authorities and do not seem to have been used.
