Presentation of Ferdinandovac

The municipality of Ferdinandovac (2,107 inhabitants in 2001; 1,984 in the village of Fernandovac) is named for Emperor Fedinand I of Austria (1793-1875, reigned 1835-1848), also King of Hungary and Croatia (1830-1848) as Ferdinand V, who built the town following urbanistic principles.

Flag of Ferdinandovac

The symbols of Ferdinandovac are prescribed by Decision Odluka o grbu i zastavi Općine Ferdinandovac, adopted on 15 May 1995 by the Municipality Assembly and published on 19 May 1995 in the County official gazette Službeni glasnik Županije Koprivnicko-križevacke, No. 5. Decision Odluka o dopuni Odluke o grbu i zastavi Općine Ferdinandovac, adopted on 3 August 1995 and published on 14 September 1995 in Službeni glasnik Županije Koprivnicko-križevacke, No. 10, amends the previous one with some procedural prescriptions.
The symbols are described in the Municipality Statutes Statute Općine Ferdinandovac, adopted on 28 September 2001 and published on 11 October 2001 in the County official gazette Službeni glasnik Koprivnicko-križevacke županije, No. 12. This is repeated in the Municipality Statutes Statut Općine Ferdinandovac, adopted on 23 January 2006 and published on 26 January 2006 in Službeni glasnik Koprivnicko-križevacke županije, No. 1, in the Municipality Statutes Statut Općine Ferdinandovac, adopted on 13 July 2009 and published on 16 August 2009 in Službeni glasnik Koprivnicko-križevacke županije, No. 10, and in the current Municipality Statutes Statut Općine Ferdinandovac, adopted on 27 March 2013 and published on 29 May 2013 in Službeni glasnik Koprivnicko-križevacke županije, No. 6 (text).

The symbols, designed by Željko Moslavac and Spomenko Relić, were approved by the Ministry of Administration on 13 July 1995, as reported by D. Ernečić [erc03].
The public contest for the design of the symbols was announced in the newspapers Virovitićki list (Natjećaj, 2 December 1994) and Glas Podravine i Prigorja (Natjećaj, 2 December 1994).

The flag is described in the Decision as follows:

The flag of the Municipality of Ferdinandovac is green with the coat of arms of the Municipality in its centre.
The ratio of height to width of the flag is 1:2. The height of the coat of arms is equal to two thirds of the flag's height, so that the coat of arms is edged with a thinner golden (yellow) border.
The flag is attached to a staff so that the figure of St. Ferdinand in the coat of arms is turned towards the hoist.
The green field of the flag, as in the Municipality coat of arms, symbolizes the still healthy nature and woods, meadows and fields, but also our greatest wealth - the farmers, as well as agriculture as the dominant activity in the Municipality of Ferdinandovac.
The colours of the flag and the coat of arms are not precisely determined in any standard colour system (e.g. RAL standard for canvas colours) but may be subsequently prescribed when the technical executive solution is found, in regard to the possibility of acquiring textiles/silk and certain printing colours.

The coat of arms is described in the Decision as follows:

The shield of the coat of arms is semi-circular in shape, its arch forming at the bottom a mild spike. The shield is horizontally divided by a silver (white) bar representing river Drava, one of the most notable features of the Municipality of Ferdinandovac. The bar coloured silver (white) is offset towards the bottom part of the shield. In the top part of the shield, coloured green, it is set a standing figure of St. Ferdinand, the patron of the Municipality, of the village and of the parish of Ferdinandovac. The figure is entirely golden (yellow) coloured. The figure of St. Ferdinand is depicted with a spread mantle on his back, slightly extended left arm to the height of his waist. On his left flank there is an obliquely set sword. In his right hand, set to his shoulders' height, the saint is holding an upright spear with a flag, which is divided in its bottom part in two points (tails).
The green field in the top part as well as the green field in the base of the shield symbolizes the fertile plain, nature, meadows, woods, flora and fauna of the region.
The golden colour symbolizes the well-being, richness and agricultural products (cereals) in which the Municipality of Ferdinandovac is also abundant.
The green field in the base, furthermore, reminds the oak woods that were once cleared to set up the first houses in Ferdinandovac. It also alerts the present and future generations of Ferdinandovac to the obligation to preserve an healthy and green environment.
The ratio of the sides in the coat of arms are 4:3. The arms use the basic colours provided by heraldry: green, golden (yellow), silver (white) and black.
