Presentation of Đelekovec

The municipality of Đelekovec (1,824 inhabitants in 2001, 1,372 in the village of Đelekovec) is located some 10 km north of Koprivnica. Former spelling gives it as Gjelekovac and Đelekovac.
In the feudal system, Đelekovec had thr status of an independent community with obligation of paying tax to the feudal lord and to serve in his banderium (military unit) in wartime. Đelekovec is the birth place of the Croatian writer Mihovil Pavlek Miškina (1887-1942). He was member of the Parliament for the Croatian Peasant's Party (HSS), leader of its "left wing"; during the Second World War, he supported the partisans' resistance and was killed in the Jasenovac concentration camp. Incidentally, some other prominent supporters of HSS in the interbellum period are from Đelekovec as well: the painter Mirko Virius, the author Mara Matocec and the physician Pavle Tomašić.

The coat of arms is "Azure on a mount vert a soldier stantant with a blouse gules, trousers of the first and boots or holding in his dexter raised a sabre argent handled or and in his sinister a Turkish head couped".
Antonio Grgić, of the Pikant Marketing company, is the author of the artistic rendition based on the historic coat of arms. This originates from a seal from ca. 1820 which was colored in Laszowski's Grbovi Jugoslavije [lsv39]. As confirmed by D. Ernečić, there was certain opposition in the municipality to readopt this historic coat of arms, deemed "cruel", for the modern municipality.
