The municipality of Pylos-Nestor (21,077 inhabitants in 2011; 55,190 ha) was formed in the 2011 local government reform by the merger of the former municipalities of Chillochoria (Χιλιοχώρια, 2,916 inh.), Koroni (Κορώνη, 5,067 inh.), Methoni (Μεθώνη, 2,598 inh.), Nestor (Μεθώνη, 5,552 inh.), Papaflessas (Παπαφλέσσας, 2,205 inh.), and Pylos (5,287 inh.).

Pylos, historically also known under its Italian name, Navarino, is the main harbour on the Bay of Navarino. Mycenean Pylos is an important archaeological site located on the western coast of the Peloponnese. The Bay of Pylos was the site of two important naval battles:
- the Battle of Pylos, in 425 BC during the Peloponnesian War;
- the Battle of Navarino, in 1827 during the Greek War of Independence.
