Overview

Ilulissat seems to have also a white flag charged with the Coat of Arms. Photo of the city hall at <www.ilulissat.gl> show a white flag hoisted even thou it is too small for final conclussion.

I have been several times in Ilulissat but never seen the arms on a flag.. You see mainly the Greenlandic flag everywhere, like in other villages. The use of the arms, however, is widespread, on stationary, souvenirs, stickers, official buildings etc.

At <www.tegnestuen6b.dk>, a photo shows a "white-with-thing" flag hoisted in front of Hotel Arctic in Ilulissat town. This makes two unsure reports of this flag.

I recently researched municipal flags in Greenland by correspondence with municipal authorities in Greenland. The results have just been published in the Fall 2005 issue of Nordisk Flaggkontakt, the journal of the Nordic Flag Society [joe05].
I managed to get confirmation from 15 of 18 municipalities all using the same flag model - the coat of arms on a white field (the colour white carries no symbolism). Ilulissat is one of them.

Coat of Arms

Ralf's website, at <www.ngw.nl>, quotes [ach82] thus:
"The arms were granted in 1969. The arms are canting, the name of the town means the icebergs. The town lies close to the most productive Greenlandic glacier, producing in the summer 15.000.000 cubic metres of ice per day (!). The town is thus famous for the gigantic icebergs floating in the fjord. The town asked a Danish artist to make arms for the municipality with icebergs and snow crystals. He came up with around 30 different designs, of which the present arms were chosen.
