The Argyll and Bute Council has acquired a flag. This is announced in the "Dunoon
Observer" of 13th Feb. 2015. It is a plain white flag with the full arms of the
Council in the centre. Oddly enough, the Council spokeswoman refers to "the
traditional Argyllshire coat of arms" which is illustrated in the article;
whereas it appears the arms actually on the flag are (as they should be) the
slightly different arms of Argyll & Bute Council rather than Argyll County
Council. I suppose the spokeswoman didn't know the difference.
There is a
subtext, not stated in the article. It is stated, correctly, that people had
been asking for flags to be flown more frequently from the Council flagpoles.
The reason is that before the Referendum the Council, presumably worried that it
would be accused of taking sides, decided to fly neither the British nor
Scottish flags on a regular basis, but only to fly a flag on the few days that
the Government recommends it be done (the Queen's birthday etc.) This left the
flagpoles bare on all other days!
