The village of Semur-en-Brionnais (800 inhabitants) was the capital of the Bailiwick of Brionnais, one of the 19 bailiwicks constituting the Duchy of Burgundy. Brionnais is renowned for cattle breeding (bovines of the Charolais race, plain white) and its Romanesque churches (Anzy-le-Duc, Châteauneuf, Igrandes, Semur-en-Brionnais).

The flag of Semur-en-Brionnais is a banner of the municipal arms. It flies over the castle St. Hugues, the birth place of St. Hugues the Great (1024-1109), Abbot of Cluny (1049-1109).
