FIFA World Cup - 2002 Korea-Japan

The 2002 FIFA World Cup was the 17th instance of the tournament that took place from 31 May to 30 June 2002. The host nations (the first and only instance of two nations hosting the same World Cup) were South Korea and Japan. This is the first major FIFA tournament to use the "slanted letters" wordmark that is currently the FIFA logo. While http://resources.fifa.com/mm/document/affederation/marketing/58/25/93/fcm-history_161213_final_neutral.pdf shows the mark was adopted in 1998, it does not seem to be used for the 1998 World Cup that took place in France, judging by

(ticket stubs).

For the logo used, it was created by the Interbrand company from its London office, in consultation with its offices in Tokyo and Seoul. According to a FIFA Press Release, it was the first time in the history of the event that the World Cup Trophy was a main feature of the logo design. While the use of blue and red for Korea and Japan, respectively, was not stated in the press release, I guess it was to tie in both national flags (blue/red for South Korea and red for Japan). The circle element that goes around the trophy also ties in to Asian culture, and in turn, both the flags of South Korea and Japan. The press release can be seen at http://www.fifa.com/worldcup/news/y=1999/m=5/news=2002-fifa-world-cup-logo-launched-70788.html.

As for a flag, https://page.auctions.yahoo.co.jp/jp/auction/o146827417 has a horizontal logo on a white flag with champions of previous editions of the World Cup on bottom in blue. At the Japanese Wikipedia version of the World Cup article, there is a stadium background with vertical banners that are in the different logo colors charged with a white logo. There is also a white vertical banner, similar to the "Fair Play" banners, used during the closing and opening ceremony where the full color logo is on white.

When I visited Seoul in August 2003, I found and purchased a 2002 FIFA World Cup desk flag (4in x 6in). It looks just like the one presented by Zachary, but with a purple field instead of white.
