On 23 November 2019, the Sidama Zone voted to become the 10th regional state in Ethiopia after a referendum in the Zone. The state was formed on 18 June 2020 following the amalgamation of part of the Southern Nations, Nationalities and Peoples' Region and the Sidama Zone following the 2019 referendum in favour of increased autonomy. The State is located in the centre of Ethiopia and is bordered in the south by the Oromia Region and the Gedeo Zone, on the west by the Bilate River which separates it from the Wolayita Zone and in the north and east by the Oromia Region.
The regional capital is in Hawassa.  The region is the leading coffee
producing area in Ethiopia, producing about 28% of the country's output.

The Ethiopian government's
website originally showed the flag of Sidama as being a green-blue-red horizontal
tricolour, with five 5-pointed stars arranged in a circle in the center of
the middle blue stripe.  No details of the symbolism of the design or colours is provided.
