The municipality of Serrato (500 inhabitants in 2014; 4,823 ha) is located 80 km north-west of Málaga and 30 km of Ronda.
The municipality of Serrato was established by Decree No. 167, adopted on 2 September 2014 by the Government of Andalusia and published on 19 December 2014 in the official gazette of Andalusia, No. 247, pp. 13-23 (text).
The separation of the submunicipal entity of Serrato, which had been established by Decree No. 110, adopted on 11 May 1999 by the Government of Andalusia and published on 15 May 1999 in the official gazette of Andalusia, No. 56 (text) was initiated on 29 October 2010 by the Municipal Council of Ronda. The separation request was approved on 8 August 2012 by the Delegation of the Government of Málaga, on 9 October 2012 by the Provincial Council of Málaga, and on 11 January 2013 by the Andalusian Council of Local Concertation.

The flag and arms of Serrato, adopted on 8 June 2004 by the Village Council and submitted on 6 July 2004 to the Directorate General of the Local Administration, are prescribed by a Resolution adopted on 6 September 2004 by the Directorate General of the Local Administration and published on 16 September 2004 in the official gazette of Andalusia, No. 182, p. 20,317 (text).
The symbols are prescribed as follows:
Flag: Rectangular in [unspecified] proportions. Made of three equal stripes. The green stripe symbolizes hope while green is the colour of the fields. The white stripe symbolizes peace while white is the colour of the houses. Blue symbolizes water resources.
Coat of arms: Spanish shield. Per pale [indeed, per pile inverted] 1. Azure a mount proper in the background, 2. Argent two fountains over three waves azure, 3. Olive tree groves vert under a sky azure. A bordure argent. The shield surmounted by a Royal crown closed.
The flag in actual use (photo, photo, photo, photo, photo) is horizontally divided green-white-blue with the municipal coat of arms in the middle.
