Symbols of San Fernando

On 27.04.2015 General Directorate of Local Administration approved that the municipal symbols are replaced by the original version of the coat of arms from 1821, and the new blue flag with the new/old coat of arms on it.

  • Coat of arms

Description: Spanish shield with a single quarter. On a field of white or silver, a three-arched gold bridge, masoned in black, over waves of azure and silver, surmounted by two silver Doric columns joined by a cartouche, bearing the inscription in black: "1810 Union and Strength 1820," from which hangs a gold key. In chief, a gold triangle, resplendent with rays of the same, charged with a human eye, which is the symbol of Divine Providence. On the sinister flank, a rising gold sun with resplendent rays of the same. Above the upper portion, on the dexter side: a laurel branch, vert, and on the sinister: an acacia branch, vert, with its fruit, gules. A silver anchor and a gold rope, masoned in black. The crest is a closed royal crown. At the tip, from right to left canton, a phylactery with the City Titles, which is a floating plaza ribbon, with the inscription in sable: Very Loyal and Constitutional, Heroic, Invincible, Parliamentary and Americanist City of San Fernando.

Meaning: The bridge is the Suazo Bridge, which halted the French advance during the War of Independence. The key symbolizes the role of Saint Ferdinand in securing access to Cádiz. The triangle represents Divine Providence. The dates indicate the resistance against the French Napoleonic army and the beginning of the Liberal Triennium. It also includes an anchor, signifying the city's enduring connection with the Spanish Navy, a connection already foreshadowed in 1940 to reinforce its military ties. The rising sun represents the hope of the island's inhabitants for the future. The laurel and oak branches represent the virtues of victory, expressing the fighter's growing identification with the motives and aims of their triumph, as well as the fertility inherent in all vegetation and immortality. It appears on the coat of arms of the Province of Cádiz.

  • Flag

In 2011 the Municipality of San Fernando celebrates the Bicentenary of the Cortes of Cadiz.
On 12 March 2011, the Royal Academy of Jurisprudence and Legislation hosted the presentation ceremony in Madrid of the book "Cortes y Constitución de Cádiz. 200 years", promoted by the Rafael del Pino Foundation on the occasion of the Bicentenary of the Cortes and the Constitution of Cadiz. The event was attended by the President of the Royal Academy of Jurisprudence and Legislation, Landelino Lavilla; the President of the Rafael del Pino Foundation, María del Pino; the Mayoress of Cádiz, Teófila Martínez; the Professors and Academicians Manuel Olivencia and Rafael Calvo Ortega; the Professor and Ambassador of Spain, Raúl Morodo; and the Director of the work, the Professor and Academician José Antonio Escudero.

On this occasion the municipal flag and coat of arms were presented. The arms are stylized version of the first coat of arms from 1821, which was rehabilitate the previous year by the San Fernando Ayuntamiento, and the flag was white with the adopted arms on it.
