Coat of Arms

Shield Azure a lion passant guardant Or, armed and tongued Gules with an annulat Or surrounding the tail.
Meaning:
According to Ralf Hartemink the arms of Varde are the oldest known Danish arms. They are based on local seals since the 13th century. The lion had however been sinister facing at least until 1933. It is that one of the Dukes of Lüneburg, as Varde had been a dowry of King Valdemar 2 Sejr (= the victor) for his sister Helene, who married Duke Wilhelm of Lüneburg. The arms were first mentioned at the death of of the duke in 1219.
The current arms with the dexter facing lion were approved in 1938.
