Description

The admiral's flag with a black ball in the upper hoist. This flag was probably in use as early as 1867, certainly by the mid 1880s and has continued in use until today, except for the few years in which there was no German Navy, and for East Germany from 1945 until 1990. Illustrated in Flaggenbuch 1939 p. 4.
Norman Martin, 1998

The diameter of the black disc should be 9/50ths of the flag's height, according to Flaggenbuch 1939.
Santiago Dotor, 25 May 2000

Album des Pavillons 2000 also shows large discs. The rank flags on Jane's 1998 have far too small discs.
Željko Heimer, 28 January 2001

According to the navy regulation [Marine Dienstvorschrift] MDv 161/1 (Bundesministerium der Verteidigung 1977), the admirals' flags are used by the admirals of the different ranks aboard a ship and partially also ashore. The flags follow a pattern already established in the navy of the German Empire [and inherited from the Prussian Navy] and readopted in 1956. The flag of the Vizeadmiral (vice-admiral) is square, white with a black Iron Cross, fimbriated black and white, with a black disc in the canton. The image I made is according to the construction details in Flaggenbuch 1939 (1992 reprint).
Marcus Schmöger, 21 November 2001
