It is a red-white vertical bicolour. The coat of arms is slightly shifted to the top, under the arms is an inscription in black Gothic letters "Heringen/" (1st line) "Helme" (2nd line).

Heringen/Helme Coat of Arms

Shield chequered of Gules and Argent flanked by two herrings haurient Azure and crested by a helm proper topped by an attire Gules.
Meaning:
The shield displays the family arms of the Counts of Hohenstein, the former local rulers. These arms already appeared on the 14th century seal of the city. The two herrings are a canting element of the city and appeared later in the arms.
