A settlement developed under the castle at the crossroads between Leipzig, Chemnitz, Dresden and Erfurt. It was called a town in 1233. Together with the surrounding territory the town was acquired by the Margraviate of Meißen in the middle of the 13th century. The oldest city seal on a charter from 1771 displayed an embattled wall with gate and two deciduous trees topped by two towers, which symbolised the two fiefdoms over the city.

Kohren-Sahlis Coat of Arms

Shield Azure with base Or, a castle of the same with open port and two embattled towers, in chief seven birds Sable volant ordered 3:4.
Meaning:
In 974 King Otto II donated the village of Kohren to the Bishopric of Merseburg. A local kin of noblemen built a castle, which had been destroyed in 1220 and rebuilt, however as a fiefdom of the Margraviate of Meißen. Since 1456 it was uninhabited. Beneath the castle a settlement developed, which gained city rights in 1453 and was subjected to the Sahlis Estate until the middle of the 19th century. In 1934 Kohren and Sahlis were united. The arms probably existed since the 15th century, although seals were not known. It is supposed that the castle is depicting the remains of Kohren Castle due to the seven jackdaws in chief. Their number is symbolising the seven villages under protection of the castle in former times.
