Coat of Arms

Description of coat of arms:
In a red field is an embattled wall topped by an embattled tower with a triangular roof. The roof is flanked by two millrinds. All charges are silver (=white).
Meaning:
According to Stadler the tower is an image of the former municipality hall, which was part of the city's fortification. In 1912 this image was chosen, based upon a seal from 1505. Tinctures and perspective of the building in Reinhardt's image are completely different. According to Veddeler the image of the tower is based upon a seal from 1578. The millrinds are taken from the arms of the former city of Anholt. Note, that the city of Isselburg before had been part of Rees county in Northrhine.

Borough of Anholt

[Isselburg-Anholt flag] image by Klaus-Michael Schneider, 10 Jul 2010

Description of flag:
The ratio is 3:5. It is a red over white over red horizontal triband with ratio 1:3:1(?). The coat of arms is in the middle of the central stripe. The ratio between the stripes is doubtful, Stadler just says "red-white-red", but usually the central stripe is broader containing the coat of arms.

Anholt Coat of Arms

Description of coat of arms:
In a red field are two silver (=white) millrinds ordered vertically.
Meaning:
According to source the image is based upon a seal from 1433. The millrinds are a simplification of the arms of knight Dietrich von Zuylen, who founded Anholt and granted to it the privileges of a city in 1349. The arms of the Zuylen kin however showed three millrinds, they can also be found in the flag of Borken County.
