Municipality

The municipality of Itapoá (20,576 inhabitants in 2019; 25,716 ha) forms the north-eastern corner of Santa Catarina, on the border with Paraná, 220 km north of Florianópolis.

Itapoá is named for a native word meaning "emerging stone", referring to a rock located 300 m off the town's central beach, which emerges at low tide.
The district of Itapoá was established within the municipality of Garuva by Law No. 8 promulgated on 1 March 1966. The municipality of Itapoá was established by State Law No. 7,586 promulgated on 26 April 1989.

Description of the Flag

Horizontally divided blue-white-red, ratio 1-2-1, with the municipal arms in the centre.

The flag and arms of Itapoá are prescribed by Municipal Law No. 835 promulgated on 11 February 2010.

Article 2.
The flag of the municipality of Itapoá shall be composed of three horizontal stripes with the red, white and blue colors, charged in the center with the coat of arms. The design of the coat of arms and the colors of the municipal flag shall follow the guidelines found in the Manual appended to this Law.

Article 3.
The heraldic characteristics of the coat of arms, symbols of Itapoá, are:
I - A crown, symbolizing Portuguese antecedents.
II - Icons of vegetation, sea water, birds and sun, symbolizing the exuberant natural environment.
III - Three quarters symbolizing the resources of the municipality: banana production and timber extraction, family-oriented fishing, cattle-breeding and staple agriculture.
IV - On the sides, a sugarcane on the left and a rice plant on the right.

The flag was originally prescribed by Municipal Law No. 55 promulgated on 11 September 1990.

Article 2.
The flag of the municipality of Itapoá shall be composed of three stripes with the red, white and blue colors, charged in the center with the coat of arms.

Red represents the soil, the people and the eagerness to foster the growth of Itapoá.
White represents people's peace.
Blue represents the beaches, which stretch over 32 km, bordered by the intense blue color of the sea, which invite to dream beyond the horizon.
