The municipality of Imaruí (11,606 inhabitants in 2010; 54,224 ha) is located 110 km south of Florianópolis.

Imaruí was, reportedly, first settled around 1800 by fishers coming from Laguna. Among the early colonists was gaúcho João Vieira da Rocha, one of the leaders of the Ragamuffin Revolution in Laguna, who moved afterwards to Imaruí with his two sons.
The municipality of Imaruí was established on 27 August 1890.

The coat of arms features the Paschal lamb, recalling the town's early name and dedication to St. John the Baptist. The fishes in base recall that Imaruí is located on Lake Imaruí, Santa Catarina's biggest lake (8,632 ha).
