ReRed pepper cultivation is Turuçu 's main source of income. Acreage decreased from 240 ha in 1998/1999 to 40 ha in 2005/2006. Fruit yield decreased from 12,6 t/ha to 10,5 t/ha but production was concentrated to 50 families in 2005-2006 instead of 150 in 1998-1999. The conventional production system requires an average of 10 pesticide sprayings every season to get rid of insect pests and fungal diseases. Transition to integrated production, and later to an organic production, with a certification scheme was recommended. A new method of fruit drying, yielding a product of homogeneous quality with less contaminants was designed by Pelotas Federal University.
