Municipality

The municipality of Harmonia (4,638 inhabitants in 2016; 4,458 ha) is located 70 km north of Porto Alegre.

Harmonia was established in 1854 by German colonists on plots sold by José (Juca) Inácio Teixeira, the son of a Dutch seaman and a Brazilian woman. The plots were designed by the land surveyor Ernesto Mûzel. The first new colonists were Pedro Kuhn and Pedro Heck, from São José do Hortêncio. A wooden chapel was erected in 1873, to be served by Jesuit fathers from Tupandi.
Harmonia was elected to a district of Montenegro in 1897. The municipality of Harmonia was established by State Law No. 8,562 promulgated on 13 April 1988, following a plebiscite held on 20 September 1987.
