Municipality

The municipality of Esperança do Sul (3,272 inhabitants in 201; 14,838 ha) is located 500 km of Porto Alegre.

Esperança do Sul is named for an historical event that took place on 6 January 1925. Heading to Vila de Alto Uruguay, the leaders of the Prestes Column, a social rebel movement led by Captain Luiz Carlos Prestes (1898-1990), passed through the village. The rumor spread among colonists that the revolutionary and governmental forces would peacefully meet there, so the place was called Esperança (Hope). Nothing happened, though, since the Prestes Column's vanguard and rearguard stayed in Tris Passos and moved to Paris, using another road.
The municipality of Esperança do Sul was established in 1997.
