Description of the flag

From www.co.livingston.state.ny.us/govctr.htm
"Livingston County was founded on February 23, 1821 and consisted of twelve townships: eight taken from Ontario and four from Genesee. However, over the years it has acquired new townships and currently exists today as a non-chartered county with 17 towns."

The flag shown on the page is a vertical banner yellow over dark green, with a white-blue-white stripe at the center. On the yellow field is a pair of scales and two feathers; on the green field the county name and seal.
Valentin Poposki, 19 January 2007

According to the photo graphs on the webpage found by Paul, the county flag has the usual horizontally oblong ratio: It is a ~5:8 horizontal tricolor of golden yellow over light blue over dark green with white fimbriations in Gambian style — _i.e._, the fimbriations' and the middle stripe's heights make up 1/3rd of the total flag's height (cp. [gm.html#con] the specs of the national flag of Gambia): in this flag the height of the middle stripe seems to be reduced to only 1/4th of the total, yieling overall specs of (8+1+6+1+8):~38. Centered on the yellow stripe, a dark green device with some white edging made of two quills crossed per salire over a scales, the latter suitably elongated to fill up approx. the middle 2/5ths of the available width.

The flag (its usual shaped version, it’s presumed, as it illustrates the text) was created in 1971 by Joe O'Dea. The scales and quills stand for Robert R. Livingston (1746-1813), for whom the county was named ([wikipedia.org]). The pattern of the flag is the usual "cartographic" allegory (again, like the flag of The Gambia [gm.html]), with the yellow area standing for wheat fields, green for pine and hemlock forests, blue for the Genesee River, and white for salt and limestone.

Vertical banner flag

[Flag of Livingstone County, New York] image António Martins-Tuválkin, 20 November 2016

The image shown here is a somewhat retouched and cropped photo of an actual flag, which seems to be a variant of the more usual horizontally oblong, vertically hoisted flag. It has the same basic design (and thus its symbolism), including the quills-and-scales device on the yellow area, and adds on the green area the county seal and the lettering "Livingston County" centered under it and set in narrow serifless capitals, the first word bold and larger.

The County seal shows very simplied on the flag, as also in this depiction, to be contrasted with other, more ellaborate versions commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Seal_of_Livingston_County,_New_York.jpg.
