From Ralf Hartemink's International Civic Arms website:
"The coat of arms was approved on 8 October 1974. The arms are a combination of elements from the arms of the former counties. The sword is taken from the arms of the Marktoberdorf county and the [crozier] from Füssen county. The lion comes from the arms of the Kaufbeuren county and is the lion of the former Benedictine abbey in Irsee, that owned a large part of the present county."
Literature: Linder and Olzog 1996."

The coat of arms was approved in 1966. The chief displays the arms of Bavaria. The main part of the county became part of Bavaria in 1803. The other two fields indicate former rulers in the area. The mitre is representing the monastery of St. Mang and the abbott's crozier the Bishops of Augsburg. The latter were most influential in the Western part of the county, the monastery in the Eastern part.

The coat of arms was approved on February 2, 1955. The lion is taken from the arms of the Benedictine monastery in Irsee. At the same time the lion is representing the Counts of Ronsberg, who also used a silver (=white) lion in their arms. The star is taken from the arms of the city of Kaufbeuren. The leaf is taken from the arms of the monastery in Rottenbuch. The colours of the last quarter are the colours of the monastery in Augsburg, owners of the Buchloe estate in the county.

The coat of arms was approved in 1969 and shows in the chief the sword as a symbol for St. Martin, the patron saint of both Marktoberdorf and Obergünzburg. The lower part combines the arms of the State of Augsburg [red-white] with the red and blue shield of the Abbey of Kempten. Both the Bishops of Augsburg and the Abbotts of Kempten owned large parts of the county.
