Gibloux

On 1 January 2016 Corpataux-Magnedens, Farvagny, Le Glèbe, Rossens and Vuisternens-en-Ogoz formed the new commune of Gibloux.

Corpataux-Magnedens (until 31 December 2015)

Gules a Saltire in chief a Maltese Cross and in base a Ram all Argent.

The new commune of Farvagny is born from the fusion of former communes of Farvagny-le-Grand, Farvagny-le-Petit, Grenilles and Posat. The new flag has taken over the lion Azure and the bend Or from Farvagny-le-Petit and Posat together with the maple leaves from the flag of Farvagny-le-Grand.

On 1 January 2003 Estavayer-le-Gibloux, Rueyres-Saint-Laurent, Villarlod snd Villarsel-le-Gibloux formed the new commune of Le Glèbe.

The cross on the flag of Estavayer is called in the French blazoning "croix pommelée trois traverses" which should be in English according to Francois Velde's website: cross pommelly with 3 bastons sinister.

A literal translation of the blazon would rather be "cross with three bars pommelly". However, I have seen this cross blazoned in English as a "triple cross", a "cross with treble traverse" (Fox-Davies), a "patriarchal cross with third bar" (for instance in Neubecker 1977) and as a "papal cross" (also Fox-Davies), being the one which appears on top of the papal staff, as the patriarchal one does on top of the patriarchs' and archbishops' ones).

The tool shown in the lower half of the flag is of course the one on which St. Laurent was roasted alive. It was a usual practice in the medieval iconography to identify a martyr by placing in his/her hands or close to him/her the tool used to martyr him/her.
