Coat of arms

Description of coat of arms:
In a blue shield is a mermaid with fair hair in natural colour.
Meaning:
According to this webpage a mermaid (local language: Seewiefken) was caught by fishermen of Minsen . She was bitterly weaping and asked the men to release her, what was refused. But nevertheless she could escape. During a service in the local parish church, which is said to have been located on an island then (probably an urban legend), a storm destroyed the complete village and nearly everybody was killed by the flood. A few survivors founded a new village with the same name on mainland. The flood due to the legend was the revenge of the mermaid.

The coat of arms had been that one of former municipality of Minsen and was overtaken by the municipality. Wangerland was established in 1972, when the municipalities of Hohenkirchen, Hooksiel, Minsen Förrien, Horumersiel-Schillig, Tettens and Waddewarden merged.
