The municipality of Wellin (2,958 inhabitants on 1 January 2007; 6,752 ha) is located southwest of Rochefort, on the border with the Province of Namur. The municipality of Wellin is made since 1976 of the former municipalities of Wellin, Chanly, Halma, Lomprez and Sohier.

Wellin belonged in the Middle Ages to the abbey of Stavelot-Malmedy, following a transfer by King Carloman in the middle of the VIIIth century. The mairie of Wellin was ran on behalf of the abbey by the local family (de Wellin).
