Background

Thabo Mofutsanyana District is one of the five districts in the Free State Province of South Africa. The seat of the municipality is in Phuthaditjhaba (formerly Witsieshoek), the fomer capital of Qwaqwa.   Thabo Mofutsanyana District includes the following local municipalities in the north-eastern Free State:
Dihlabeng, Maluti a Phofung, Mantsopa, Nketoana, Phumelela and Setsoto.

It is named after Edwin Thabo Mofutsanyana (1899-1995), a stalwart of the South African Communist Party, who was born in the area.

Thabo Mofutsanyana District Municipality flag

The flag of the municipality is white with the municipal emblem in the centre and the name of the municipality below. The emblem features the scenic Golden Gate on the slopes of the Drakensberg Mountains where it is located.
