Description of the flag

The flags and arms of the university and its colleges are illustrated here. The presidential flag is in use in this photo during a speech by Clinton.

Stanford University is large, private research university in the Bay Area of California, near Palo Alto.

Dave Fowler, 24 March 2016

On this page, nine Stanford University flags are shown:
University Flag University Flag
Presidential Flag
Flag of the School of Medicine
Flag of the School of Law
Flag of the School of Humanities and Sciences
Flag of the School of Engineering
Flag of the School of Earth, Energy & Environmental Sciences
Flag of the Graduate School of Education
Flag of the Graduate School of Business

The flags of the schools are banners of their arms. Comparing this photo of actual flags with the artwork given for each BoA we can see that the shades of red and of purple in actual use are brighter than depicted. Also noteworthy from that photo is the use of plain yellow and white for the heraldic metals, and the unusually light and bright shades used for green and blue.

Additionally, of lateral interest, each faculty or graduation subject has a distinct color, used in some details of the academic regalia. See .../regalia]:
Arts, Letters, Humanities - White
Business, Commerce, Accountancy - Drab
Communication, Journalism - Crimson
Economics - Copper
Education - Light Blue
Engineering - Orange
Fine Arts, including Architecture - Brown
Law - Purple
Medicine - Kelly Green
Music - Pink
Philosophy - Dark Blue
Science - Golden Yellow
Speech - Silver Grey
Theology - Scarlet

No indication of these colors being used in any flag.

António Martins-Tuválkin, 1 December 2016

The flags aren't actually the banners of arms, but are derived from the blazons of coats of arms, which are also given here, but with no images. Consequently, all images may be made in couples - one for the shield of arms and the other for the flag.

Such derivations may seem odd, but are not unknown - in Serbia, a typical way to create the flag of a local government area is to simplify and re-arrange the charges of its coat of arms. This is done especially if the blazon is complex, while the simpler blazons are usually converted into the banners of arms.

Institution

Stanford University - "Stanford University, officially Leland Stanford Junior University, is a private research university located in the census-designated place of Stanford, California, near the city of Palo Alto. The campus occupies 8,180 acres (3,310 hectares), among the largest in the United States, and enrolls over 17,000 students. Stanford is ranked among the top universities in the world. Stanford was founded in 1885 by Leland and Jane Stanford in memory of their only child, Leland Stanford Jr., who had died of typhoid fever at age 15 the previous year. Leland Stanford was a U.S. senator and former governor of California who made his fortune as a railroad tycoon. The school admitted its first students on October 1, 1891, as a coeducational and non-denominational institution. Stanford University struggled financially after the death of Leland Stanford in 1893 and again after much of the campus was damaged by the 1906 San Francisco earthquake. Following World War II, provost Frederick Terman supported faculty and graduates' entrepreneurialism to build self-sufficient local industry in what would later be known as Silicon Valley. The university is organized around seven schools on the same campus: three schools consisting of 40 academic departments at the undergraduate level as well as four professional schools that focus on graduate programs in law, medicine, education, and business. The university also houses the public policy think tank, the Hoover Institution. ” Source: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stanford_University
